Milan San Remo is the longest one day classic at 296km and often regarded as a sprinters classic , as long as they are still in the lead group after the Poggio and Cipressa. Many sprinters have won this classic such as Gianni Bugno , Seán Kelly and off course Mark Cavendish – which was the 100th edition and at his first attempt ! The Pro route on paper doesn’t look to demanding for them but the distance reduces the field along the way.
You will be pleased to know (or maybe not !) that we will NOT be taking on the pro distance but completing a somewhat shorter but still demanding 120km. The weekend give us the chance to watch the pro race come across the final two climbs or at the finish line, then on the Sunday we will ride a 100km course.
The San Remo – San Remo “Classicissima” is just the right race for retracing the steps of the great champions of both yesterday and today, a Granfondo that winds through the roads of the most beautiful places in the province of Imperia.
The Granfondo Route start is from the beginning of Passeggiata Salvo d’Acquisto and heads towards French border on to the town of Camporosso, followed by a slight climb you to Dolceacqua, a stunning village. The event then tracks up along the valley to approach Isolabona,
You will continue climbing, and come to Bajardo, at the top of the Val Nervia, you will be at an altitude of 900 meters and circled by olives, chestnut trees and vines, the town features narrow, winding streets and ancient stone houses. From there proceed towards the Provincial Road 54, going through the village of Vignai until you reach Argallo, from here you will descend to Taggia,
There is a split the Mediofondo heads towards San Remo, while the Granfondo proceeds along the Aurelia state road, this time in an easterly direction, to reach first Riva Ligure and then Santo Stefano al Mare along the sea front. You will soon be approaching one of the legendary climbs of the Milan – San Remo: “La Cipressa”, then go down along the coast to reach Santo Stefano al Mare again and immediately go up towards Terzorio, then continue on to the little center of Pompeiana. At this point you will be homing in on the finish, but first you have to reach Castellaro again, overlooking the Taggia plain. By now there are very few kilometers left before the finish line, you will return on the Aurelia, crossing Arma di Taggia and on towards the last obstacle, the legend the Poggio di Sanremo – here ends your epic ride.
