This is a trip to fit your availability .
Bormio hosts some of the most famous climbs used by the Giro over the years.
I have detailed below descriptions altimeter profiles so you know what you are in for. As a 5 day cycling trip there will be easier days than others if there’s such a thing in Bormio.
This trip will have a following Support Van , so when you reach the top extra clothes will be available along with and drinks , with the odd “sticky bottle” on the way up.
We will be staying at the Palace Hotel , on a half board basis (single occupancy or twin rooms available) which is in the heart of Bormio and boasts a Wellness Centre and a Pool . Should there be a bad weather day then you can make use of the Gym. If you do not wish to bring your bike there Celso Bike Hire has a great selection of road bikes.
There is not a set day to ride each climb , a view will be taken the night before at dinner.
The Stelvio is probably the most famous pass in Italy (maybe Europe) and has been used on numerous occasions during the Giro. There are two side to it hence “pass” and it may be good to tackle both during one ride with a good lunch in between.
Climbing from Bormio , Length 21.5km , start at 1225m , finishing 2758m , Average 7%, Max 14%
This is the side from Parto which you might think is the easier side but with an extra 3km of climbing it feels harder but that’s just my take on the Stelvio.
Climbing from Prato , Length 24.3km , start at 950m , finishing 2758m , Average 7.4%, Max 10%
Not as well known as the Stelvio but still a great climb. It was made famous when Andy Hampstem the only American to win the Giro came over it 3rd place then to then go on to win the GC , there’s an iconic photo at the Cafe at the top worth the climb for that alone !
Climbing from Bormio , Length 25.6km , start at 1217m , finishing 2621m , Average 5.5 , Max 10.6%
Climbing from Ponte di Lengo is somewhat shorter at 17.5km but don’t let this kid you it ramps up and hurts on those red sections. This is often climbed climbed with a loop round after taking on the Mortirolo. Please note if you climb from this side yopu will require lights as the tunnel close to the top is badly lit.
Climbing from Ponte di Lengo length 17.3km , start at 1258m , finishing 2621m , Average 7.9 , Max 16%
Very much an unknown climb to most cyclists but nestled in the heart of Bormio. By the nature of its name it rises up to 2000m and finishes at a Ski station so it does not pass over. This one is often ridden the same day as the Cancano.
Climbing from Bormio length 9.8m , start at 1203m , finishing 2000m , Average 7.5 , Max 9.5%
The ride to the Lake as it is often known , this climb won’t push you to your limits but stretch you a bit. As you climb hopefully you will have time to take in the stunning views available to you. Once you have reached the top there a new-ish amount of tarmac and you will roll along past a lake and then find the tea stop.
Climbing from Bormio length 11.4km , start at at 1317, finishing at 2100m , average 5% max 8.6%
A climb recently used in the 2024 Giro where Tad’ won (again) . It’s quite unknown simply because of other famous climbs in the area but at 23km it’s a climb that has a long run-in, with the real business starting at 9km in. It is quite a busy road as it runs into Switzerland but still enjoyable.
Climbing from Bormio length 23.8km , start at at 1211, finishing at 2288m , average 4.6% max 8.4%
This climb can be located 3km from the top of the Stelvio on the Bormio side. It’s often used for dropping down into Switzerland and then looping round to climb the Stelvio from the other side. It’s certainly worth the climb but only available by going in the opposite direction of which was just mentioned. When climbing it won’t be a picnic ride it will push you all the way. After completing the climb you can turn left and go down to Bormio , or turn right and climb 3km at circa 10% to the top of the Stelvio.
Climbing from Santa Maria length 13.3km start at 1376m, finishing at 2500m , average 8.5% , max 11.0%
